Horace Greeley was born in 1811, to a middle class family in New Hampshire. In his early life he quit school at the age of 14 and became a printers apprentice for the northern spectator, a popular newspaper of the time. In 1836 greeley settled down in New York city where he began working with many different publishing companies. And in 1841 he founded his most popular newspaper, called The New York Tribune. His newspaper offered book reviews and avoided shocking stories, written only to provoke interest.
Working as an editor, Greeley would write editorials on political topics, such as slavery, and was even considered "the greatest editor of his day". His stories were based on Whig ideals, such as high tariffs, internal improvements and a bank of the U.S. He would also write strong reports against; slavery and worked to make his newspaper credible for the masses. Greeley's main concern was writing for the comon man, who he believed recieved little attention in the other poular newspapers.
Although Greeley was a conservative whig, he wrote his opinion on topics like women's rights, labor, and monopolies. He also wrote editorials advocating the whig and republican party ideals.During the 1850's he wrote editorials on the abolition of slavery, and talked poorly about the dred Scott decision, the Kansas- Nebraska act and the fugitive slave act; for he believed that these political issues only benefitted the slave owners, which he strongly disliked. His newspaper became very successful the rural west. As his life progressed he helped create the republican party, in 1856, and decided to fully support the war. During the election of 1860, Greeley Fully supported Abraham LIncoln; for he believed that his presidential platform was noble and trustworthy. Initially he believed in the secession of the south, but later became a war supporter once the issue of slavery became involved. His main reason for supporting the war effort was the emancipation of slaves, and in 1862 he published an article about the need for abolition of slavery. By the end of the war he spoke out politically ti the northerners about providing amnesty to the confederates. And in 1868 greeley supported presidential candidate Ullysses S Grant, but after some time he began unrealized the corruption within Grants administration. So in 1872 Greeley ran for president against Grant in the liberal republican party. Probably due to his strong published beliefs, Greeley was mocked and ridiculed, and thus lost the election. In adition, his wife had died during his campaign, which took a large toll on Greeley.
His loss caused him to go mentally insane, and because of this he died in a mental institution in 1872.
What a beauty!
