Treaty of Robby Hidalgo

The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo had a huge impact on the United States of America. The treaty was signed on February 2, 1848 after two years of fighting betwen the Mexicans and Americans. This remains the longest running treaty between the two great countries of Mexico and the United States of America. The result of the Treay of Guadalupe Hidalgo was the United States of America recieved more than 500,000 square miles, also known as the California territory. This land was wanted by James Polk since his running for president of the United States of America. President James Polk had a four part program during his four year term. His program included lowering tarrifs, restore independent treasury, aqusition of California territory, and the settlement of Oregon. President Polk wanted to buy the California from Mexico for $25 million or ¥2.5 billion. o_O  Polk sent John Slidell to Mexico City to buy the California territory from the Mexicans. Mexico was still upset from the fued over Texas and took this offer as a slap across the face and Slidell was sent away and denied. Pol wanted the territory so bad he was willing to go to war over it. Polk sent 4,000 American troops to the Rio Grande boarder. Mexico believed that the United States-Mexico boarder was in fact the Nucese River, but still they marched on. When Mexico crossed the Rio Grande borader, where the Americans were staying put, and the fighting began. Because the MExicans had crossed the boarder first Polk said that they were the aggressor. In reaction, Polk asked Congress to declare war on MExico and they did. The Americans war efforts could be divided into three parts. There main goal was to obtain CAlifornia, and they did. NExt The United States won many key victories over the Mexcians in Texas. And finally the American conquest on Mexico City. On the journey to Mexico City, Polk sent Nicholas Trist. His job was to secure a peace deal with Mexico as soon as the presidents orders were met. The deal the Trist had made was, The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The Treaty had many positive effects on the growing nation. It ended the MExican American war. America had got the land that they wanted, CAlifornia territory. The United States would pay $15 million for the land and also pay off their $3.5 million debts to Mexico. The new land would promote the expansion out west and the Gold rush was soon to come.
