Southern farmers with and without slaves

- family farmers without slaves were called "yeoman" farmers
- they were praised by Thomas Jefferson
- raised livestock, grew corn and sweet potatoes for own consumption
- lived much more isolated lives than other farmers
- family members did the labor
- some (mainly young men) rented land or hired themselves out as agricultural workers
- supported slavery for racial superiority
- most farmers who did own slaves only had fewer than ten
- farmers usually worked with slaves
- their goal was to own more slaves and eventually become plantation owners
